How to Be a Better Salesman

If you make your living at sales, then you know that the best investment you can ever make is to continually seek out new ways to be a better salesman. The time and money you invest in learning new ways to communicate better with your prospects, and get those prospects to take action can pay huge dividends for years to come in the form of higher commission checks, recognition, awards, promotions, and increased satisfaction with your job. This article will show you some tips on how you can be a better salesman.

To start with, make sure you aren't sabotaging yourself by ignoring the basic fundamentals: show up on-time, dress appropriately, and pay attention to your grooming and personal hygiene. Nothing will turn people off quicker than a salesman who shows up late, looks sloppy, and smells bad!

When you greet them, remember that first impressions count. Look them right in the eye, smile, and shake their hand. Hand them your business card and tell them your name. Ask them their name, or confirm their name if you already know it. Use their name as often as possible without forcing it. These are all basic people skills that will definitely help you be a better salesman.

The next most important thing you can do to be a better salesman is to work on your people skills. How well you relate to your prospects is crucial to improving your sales results. You must get your prospects to like and trust you before you try to sell them anything. The old saying "they don't care how much you know until they know how much you care" is 100% accurate. Never go right into your presentation or your qualification stage without taking the time to build rapport with your prospects first. Look for areas of common interest, and don't be afraid to give personal details about yourself. Just make sure that you focus on them, not you.

Once you've established rapport with your prospects, they will be much more receptive to anything else you have to say. If you skip this crucial step, your prospects may listen to you, but they won't really trust you. Your sales will suffer and you'll wonder why. Spend more time making a friend and developing rapport, and you'll definitely be a better salesman.
